Frontier AI.
Second-class post.

A fictional research programme led by Tim Samford-Cheese. The other Tim is not involved, except where the paperwork says he is.

Tim → Royal Mail → Jim → smartphone → Dot → Jim → Royal Mail → Tim

In the Poteto universe, Dot has not reached Britain. Tim has therefore installed it on a smartphone in America and sends his prompts to Jim by postcard. Jim reads them aloud and posts back the answer. HR calls this “security”. Jim calls it “not what we agreed”.

Bureaucratic Misadventures

Latency Induced Epiphany

Other Tim reported a breakthrough in the superconducting potato starch experiment after eighteen months of continuous conversation with the AI model. The context window, once a black hole, had suddenly yielded a profound insight: the starch was not superconducting, but the railway station was. HR immediately incorporated this finding into the company's policy on speculative transportation. Meanwhile, Communications redesigned the MySpace profile background to include a banner reading 'Poteto: Where Innovation Meets Transit'. Poetato, still pondering the number of letters in 'potato', was promoted to Head of Theoretical Counting.

Audience development / fictional departmental report

Communications has located the audience, approximately.

Poteto's entire social media strategy operated through MySpace. This followed a misunderstanding of the instruction to meet the audience where they were. Communications had taken this to mean 2006. Every research announcement was now posted beneath an autoplaying song and a statement that the institute was feeling accomplished. Nobody had responded, which the department attributed to unusually strict privacy settings. A report claiming one hundred per cent audience retention was withdrawn after someone noticed that the audience was Tom. Tim requested a move to a newer platform. Communications agreed and began redesigning the profile background. HR approved the arrangement because it provided the benefits of public engagement without the risk of encountering the public.

The other Tim has become difficult to retrieve.

The research assistant was also called Tim. This had initially been regarded as an administrative economy. Other Tim was investigating potato starch as a superconducting material using a single OpenAI conversation begun eighteen months earlier. The conversation had since acquired seven competing accounts of the experiment, a lunch order, and a firm belief that Tim was a railway station. Its context window was now effectively a black hole: facts entered at considerable speed and re-emerged as supporting evidence for something else. Starting a new chat was out of the question. Other Tim said they would lose the progress. The progress was last observed in February, moving away from the original question.

People & obsolete systems · fictional lab report

HR has secured the past against unauthorised improvement.

Poteto HR operated version one of the 2023 OpenAI Playground in a browser tab labelled DO NOT REFRESH. This was for security reasons, a phrase which at Poteto meant that the person explaining it had stopped taking questions. The model had recently promoted the kettle, declined to recognise Thursdays, and supplied a convincing reference for an employee who had never existed. The reference was excellent. Tim requested an upgrade. HR explained that newer software might contain errors they had not yet incorporated into company policy.

“Our existing mistakes have completed their probation.” — Poetato
Model behaviour

The answer has been postponed to accommodate further certainty.

On Friday, Poetato was asked how many letters there were in potato. By Monday he had established a framework, identified several important perspectives, and congratulated the question on raising the issue. By Tuesday he was discussing the history of counting. No number had been forthcoming. Tim considered this evidence of deep reasoning. Other Tim considered it evidence that Friday was a railway station. The institute has now extended the experiment indefinitely, partly to preserve scientific continuity and partly because nobody remembers who was supposed to be waiting for the answer.

“I am almost ready to explain why I am not yet ready.” — Poetato
Frontier research · fictional lab report

Frontier intelligence has been sent second class.

Lead researcher Tim Samford-Cheese had solved regional AI access by increasing the region. In Poteto's fictional research programme, Dot was unavailable in Britain but worked on a smartphone belonging to his colleague Jim in America. Tim therefore posted his questions to Jim, who read them aloud and posted the answers back. HR called this an air-gapped security architecture. The air gap was mostly the Atlantic. Time to first token was eight working days, or twelve when Jim went fishing. The context window was one postcard. Tim proposed scaling to two postcards, but HR said this would create an unacceptably large attack surface.

“Jim has enabled multimodal input. He can also look at the stamp.” — Poetato
Company announcement

An institution has happened to a potato.

Poetato had been having an unremarkable afternoon when somebody put a lanyard on him. This transformed him, in the eyes of the organisation, from a potato into the organisation's most senior potato. He was photographed, given responsibilities, and informed that he was passionate about innovation. His request for a window was received warmly, assigned a reference number, and sent to a department which existed primarily to prevent requests for windows from reaching windows. Poetato remained where he was. This was reported to the board as excellent staff retention.

“I had thought a growth opportunity would involve soil.” — Poetato
